Romanov is a byzantine variation with beads between the segments.
In this tutorial I will show you how to make a Romanov bracelet with beads of 4 mm. Also you must respect the wire diameter (WD) and the inner diameter (ID) of the rings. If you want to try it with different beads, you must first find the formula (WD and ID of the rings) through experimentation.
1. Required Tools and Materials
For his tutorial you will need:
- tools for making the elements: two pairs of chain nose pliers without teeth, a round nose plier and a piece of fine sandpaper
- the elements: the clasp, 28 byzantine worms, 14 s beads, 15 big links and the finish rings
For the making of the byzantine worms we will use small rings with 0,67 mm wire diameter and an inner diameter of 2,38 mm. The big links have a wire diameter of 1,02 mm and an inner diameter of 4,12. Finally, the wire that passes through the 4 mm beads has a wire diameter of 0,67 mm.
2. Step by Step Process
2.1. Making byzantine worms
Put 4 closed rings into one opened ring:
Close the ring and add another one near him, going again through the 4 rings:
Arrange them into 2-2-2 chain:
Spread the rightmost 2 rings apart and pass a ring through them, between the middle ones. I put 2 pictures from 2 sides of the piece for a better understanding:
Add another one near the last ring, going the same way as before:
Add 2 rings, going through the last 2 ones:
Repeat the step:
Observe that another 2-2-2 chain has formed. Again spread the rightmost 2 rings apart and pass a ring through them, between the middle ones. The following images are placed on two rows to better exemplify the process:
Add another one near the last ring, going the same way as before:
This can be used as a byzantine tutorial also – if you keep repeating these steps, you will make a byzantine model. But for Romanov we need only small segments, so we will stop here.
The first worm is done. You have 27 more to do. Take your time 🙂
2.2. Making the S beads
Prepare 14 beads of 4 mm and 14 small pieces of wire 1,8 cm long.
Start this by taking one piece of wire and grip the end of it with the top of your round nose plier:
Rotate until the wire touches itself, forming a small “circle”:
Add a bead and rotate the other end in the opposite way from the previous one:
If your S bead is deformed arrange it using the chain nose pliers:
Use fine sandpaper to clean the marks left by the round nose plier on the wire. Try not to touch the bead.
Make 13 more S beads.
2.3. Linking the elements
Open one big ring and put in it, respecting the order, the following elements: the clasp, a byzantine worm, a S bead, another byzantine worm.
Close the link and add a big opened ring, going through the 3 rightmost elements:
Put in it a byzantine worm, followed by a S bead and another byzantine worm:
Repeat the step:
Repeat until you link all the byzantine worms and S beads.
Now add an opened big link, going through the 3 rightmost elements:
Put in it the finish rings:
